Spanish Village, Carefree’s historic commercial area

Located in the heart of Maricopa County, just north of Phoenix, is the charming community of Carefree, AZ. Spanning approximately 8.5 square miles with a population of around 3,600 residents, Carefree has become a true haven for those looking to live in the Phoenix-Mesa-Chandler metropolitan area.

Carefree is located right beside Cave Creek, another small town in Arizona. It is 40 minutes away from Scottsdale and around 50 minutes away from Phoenix. The Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is around 40 minutes from Carefree. The SkyRanch at Carefree, which has been running since the 1950s, is the town’s own private airport.

Carefree’s natural beauty, recreational opportunities, and welcoming atmosphere has earned it a reputation for being one of the best places to retire in Arizona.

Brief History

The town of Carefree was founded by K.T. Palmer and Tom Darlington, two entrepreneurs who set out to create a new community in the desert north of Phoenix. Inspired by the idea of a town that created a relaxed and laid-back environment for its residents, they developed a master plan for the community and aptly named it Carefree. Palmer and Darlington envisioned an exclusive desert retreat that focused on outdoor recreation, arts, and leisure, all while preserving the area’s natural beauty and landscapes.

Construction began in 1959, with homes, a golf course, an airport, and its iconic sundial being built over the next decade. While Carefree did not become the master-planned community that it originally envisioned, it became an official Arizona town instead. Carefree was incorporated in 1984.

What It’s Known For

When it comes to living a laid-back lifestyle in the greater Phoenix area, Carefree truly lives up to its name. This charming town is known for its relaxed atmosphere, breathtaking natural scenery, and world-class amenities. One of the town’s most endearing aspects is its quirky street names. The town has one-of-a-kind names like East Street, Nonchalant Avenue, Linger Lane, and Ho Hum Road.

In the 1960s and 1970s, Carefree played host to Southwestern Studios, a 160-acre production facility where The Dick Van Dyke Show was filmed. Carefree is also home to the iconic Boulders Resort, a luxurious getaway surrounded by striking boulder outcroppings.
